The Polo Museale Casa Zapata is a Spanish noble estate built during the 16th century by the Zapata family. It is situated in the town center of Barumini, exactly 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) from Su Nuraxi. During renovations, workers discovered that the palace had been constructed directly on top of an older Nuragic structure, Nuraghe Su Nuraxi 'e Cresia.

Exploring the Local Villages of Marmilla

To experience the authentic rural atmosphere of southern Sardinia, you should visit the small agricultural towns surrounding Barumini. In Baressa, the local economy centers on olive orchards and almond groves. The town holds the annual Sagra della Mandorla (Almond Festival) in early September. This displays traditional almond-based pastries and local woodcarvings. Visitors can walk through narrow historic alleys lined with Spanish-style portal arches dating to the 17th century.

Turri is situated five kilometers west of Barumini. The village is famous for its saffron fields, which dye the plains yellow during the late autumn harvest. Local farmers cultivate the precious spice by hand. They harvest the crocus flowers at dawn. In early November, the Sagra del Peperoncino (Chili Festival) brings local food producers together. Pauli Arbarei contains a small municipal museum showing ancient farming implements and traditional Sardinian textiles. This illustrates the historical continuity of agricultural life in Marmilla.

These surrounding villages preserve ancient architectural styles. Many houses include central courtyards (lollas) with wooden gates and stone archways. The agricultural communities maintain active links to their history. This celebrates traditional crafts like basket weaving and hand-loom weaving. Walking through these quiet towns gives visitors an authentic view of the Sardinian countryside, far from the busy coastal tourist resorts.
